Sprinter Nicolas Macrozonaris won the Canadian championships 100m final today in a rainy, windy Windsor, Ontario. It was his 4th title, behind only Ben Johnson, Bruny Surin and Harry Jerome in total titles won.
Anson Henry led a tight group of runners chasing Macrozonaris into the finish line to make it very interesting in the last 20 metres. But after a few seconds reviewing the photo finish Macrozonaris was declared the winner in 10.35, followed by Henry in 10.37, Neville Wright in 10.38 and Richard Abu-Bobie in 10.39. In addition, a swirling wind, throughout the day blowing strongly in both directions, made it seem like tougher conditions than the official wind reading of -0.1 m/s would suggest. "It was a good race with a tight final, but there are still things to improve," said Macrozonaris.
"It was not a perfect race and the conditions were not the greatest. At around 80 metres, I hit arms with the runner to my right, throwing off my rhythm. "My objective is to win another four national titles, which would tie me with Harry Jerome," added the 26-year-old sprinter. In other events Perdita Felicien won the 100m hurdles in a wind assisted time of 12.50 while Charles Allen emerged victorious in the men's event. Tyler Christopher won the 400m in a championship record time of 45.10 sec. |
