Relay team still a question By FRANCOIS FOISY, Sun Media, Thu, April 22, 2004 Will Nicolas Macrozonaris be on the Olympic track at the stadium in Athens when the pistol signals the start of the 4-by-100-metre relay? It isn't clear yet, but Macrozonaris and Canadian relay coach Glenroy Gilbert say they hope so. At the 2003 world championships in Paris, Gilbert slotted Macrozonaris first among the team's runners. But Macrozonaris begged off, citing his lack of training in cornering as an excuse. This, despite the fact he's the Canadian champion in the 200-metre sprint which involves running through a corner. It clearly was the continuation of a quarrel that dated back to the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. "I never would have thought that my decision would have created such a scandal," the sprinter said. But a scandal it became, with many observers blaming Macrozonaris for the confrontation and others shooting their arrows at Gilbert. "We spoke to each other a few weeks ago and communication was good," Macrozonaris said. Added Gilbert: "We both admitted our mistakes and I think we've learned something from this incident. "In Paris, I believed I had communicated in an effective way with him, but obviously, that wasn't the case. I suppose that I could have been clearer in my remarks, but I'd like us to forget what happened over there." Gilbert said while there continues to be some apprehension of future conflict, "in Athens I'm going to ask Nic to run in the order that will be the most beneficial to the team." As for lingering ill will stemming from the Paris incident from the other members of the relay team -- Pierre Browne, Anson Henry and Charles Allen -- Gilbert insists all are determined to put together the best effort possible for Athens, "and that they want Nic at the heart of the team." Macrozonaris will participate in three 4-by-100-metre training camps in the coming months in Louisiana, Texas and Pennsylvania. He occasionally catches himself dreaming about a relay medal. "You know, if there are four 10.1 or 10.2 (second) runners, our chances are good," Macrozonaris said. |
