Macrozonaris to run at Athletissima SGP
Posted by webmaster on Friday, June 27 2003

Nicolas Macrozonaris will run in Lausanne, Switzerland on July 1st at the Athletissima 2003 Super Grand Prix meeting.

"I feel strong," Macrozonaris said today when contacted at his European training base in Brescia, Italy.  "I will hopefully run another two races there, good experience heading into nationals and if all goes well Paris in August."

The Lausanne meet will not be short of top sprinters.  American stars Tim Montgomery and Maurice Greene will meet up for the first time this year.  Newly crowned US 100-metre champion Bernard Williams is also in the field.

"It's a fast track there apparently," said Macrozonaris about Lausanne.  "The top Americans and others will be there too so it should be interesting."

Following Lausanne Macrozonaris competes in Paris on the 4th of July before returning to Montreal.

Macrozonaris third in 100 metres
Posted by webmaster on Thursday, June 26 2003

Trikala, Greece (AP) — Nicolas Macrozonaris, of Montreal, placed third in the 100 metres at the IAAF Super Grand Prix meet in Greece Tuesday, further establishing himself as a sprinter capable of challenging when the Olympics are staged in Athens in 2004.

Macrozonaris posted a time of 10.15, which was bettered by Deji Aliu (10.00) and Britain's Dwain Chambers (10.03).

Olympic and world champion Costas Kenderis, of Greece, struggled to win the 200 metres in front of his home crowd. Kenderis finished in 20.30 seconds, holding off Stephane Buckland of Mauritius. Spectators broke into wild celebration and attempted to storm the track at this central Greek town, 203 miles north of Athens.

Buckland clocked 20.32 seconds, and Deji Aliu was third with 20.49.

The meet was moved to Trikala because of repairs to Athens' Olympic stadium for the 2004 Games.

Svetlana Feofanova failed in three attempts to clear 15 feet, 10 inches in the women's pole vault and break Stacy Dragila's world record of 15-9¼.

Feofanova won the event with a vault of 15-5, ahead of Yelena Isinbayeva, and Tatyana Polnova who both cleared 15-1. Dragila jumped 14-9 and was fifth.

Christine Arron beat Zhanna Block to win the women's 100 meters in 11.09 seconds. Christe Gaines of the United States finished third.

In the men's long jump, American Dwight Phillips won easily with a jump of 27-8¼. Louis Tsatoumas of Greece jumped 27-4½, while Savante Stringfellow of the United States took third place with 27-2.

Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic won the 400-meter hurdles in 48.07 seconds. Ian Weakley of Jamaica came in second at 48.55, and Chris Rawlinson of Britain was third with 48.57.

In the women's 400-meter hurdles, American Sandra Glover was first in 54.79 seconds, beating Brazil's Surita Febbraio and Androula Sialou of Cyprus.

False start confusion freezes Macrozonaris
Posted by webmaster on Friday, June 6 2003

Canadian Press, June 6, 2003

TORINO, Italy -- Nicolas Macrozonaris of Laval, Que., thought there was a false start in the men's 100-metre sprint final Friday and never got out of the starter's blocks at an international track and field competition.

American Coby Miller won the gold medal with a time of 10.10 seconds. Nigerian Uchenna Emedolu was second in 10.19 with Ricardo Williams of Jamaica third in 10.29.

Macrozonaris was sure Emedolu, who was in the lane next to him, had false started and the race would be stopped. But the other runners kept going to the finish line.

"I thought they were going to call it back," Macrozonaris said. "The guy took off so early I couldn't believe it.

"I'm disappointed not to get the run in. I was feeling in really good shape. I though I had a personal best in me."

Macrozonaris ran a personal-best time of 10.03 second last month at a Grand Prix in Mexico, where he edged world-record holder Tim Montgomery of the U.S., for a stunning gold.

"There was no sensor in the blocks so it came down to the decision of the officials," said Macrozonaris' coach Daniel St-Hilaire. "I guess the good side to this is that he's saved his strength for the Super Grand Prix next week.

"We'll chalk this one down as a stepping stone in his development as a young athlete."

In the women's 400-metre hurdles, Karlene Haughton of Brampton, Ont., was sixth in 57.42 seconds. Montreal's Achraf Tadili of Montreal was eighth in the men's 800-metre event with a time of in 1:46.90, the second-fastest time in his career and the fastest by a Canadian this year.

Macrozonaris does not finish Torino race
Posted by webmaster on Friday, June 6 2003

A very disappointing non-result in Torino, Italy today for Nicolas Macrozonaris.

Believing the race would be called back after a quick start, Nicolas did not get out of the blocks.

The officials, who did not have the assistance of electronic start equipment, did not call the race back.

Nicolas will now move on to Ostrava, Czech Republic, for a 100-metre race on June 12.

No shortage of strong opposition for Macrozonaris
Posted by webmaster on Tuesday, June 3 2003

Nicolas will line up against the marquee names of 100 metre sprinting in the next two weeks when he races in Italy and the Czech Republic.

In Turin this Friday, June 6, Nicolas will race against track legend Frankie Fredericks of Namibia, silver medallist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics behind Canadian great Donovan Bailey.  American Coby Miller, who finished fourth behind Nicolas’s winning run in Mexico City last month, is also in the Grand Prix II race.

Following Turin, Nicolas travels to Eastern Europe where on June 12 he will race against a trio of British sprinters including Jason Gardener, Mark Lewis-Francis and European Champion Dwain Chambers.

The Ostrava, Super Grand Prix field will also include Commonwealth Games champion Kim Collins of St-Kitts, who last month defeated world and Olympic champion Maurice Greene.  The US’s Miller is also in this field.

Macrozonaris races to silver at Grand Prix event
Posted by webmaster on Tuesday, June 3 2003

HENGELO, Netherlands (CP, posted 6/1/03) - Canadian champion Nicolas Macrozonaris posted another strong showing on the Grand Prix track and field circuit Sunday.

The Laval, Que., native earned a silver medal in the men's 100 metres at the fourth stop on the IAAF Grand Prix tour in Hengelo, Netherlands.

Last year's IAAF World Cup champion Uchenna Emedolu of Nigeria took the gold in 10.19 seconds. He withstood a surging Macrozonaris who clocked 10.29.

Darren Campbell of Britain was third at 10.33.

"I was initially disappointed in the time," said Macrozonaris, in his first race since he beat world record holder Tim Montgomery for the gold at a Grand Prix in Mexico City last month.

"But the headwind was strong (-2.2 m/s). That brought me down after I got off the blocks well and favored the bigger guys. So in reality it was pretty good. Consistency is what I'm after at this time of year."

The Hengelo track is considered one of the slower ones on the circuit. The track record is 10.08 seconds.

Macrozonaris admitted he was feeling a lot of confidence as he stepped into the starter's blocks Sunday.

"For the first time in my career, the other guys were gunning for me," he said. "It's a totally different feeling."

Macrozonaris competes on Friday at a Grand Prix II event in Torino, Italy followed by a Super Grand Prix competition in Ostrava, the Czech Republic June 12.

He was the only Canadian at Sunday's meet.
