Tue February 25, 2003 12:10 PM ET ATHENS (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan gave his backing on Tuesday for an Olympic Truce during the 2004 Games in Athens -- urging warring nations to put down their arms during the event. At a signing ceremony for the truce in the Greek capital, Annan said just paying lip service to the ancient Greek idea was not enough. "It is good to support the truce and sign it. But we all have to try to practice it," Annan told reporters. In ancient Greece warring cities had to lay down arms during the Games to secure the participation of athletes and free passage for spectators. Offenders were banned from future Olympics. |

Canadian 100-meter champion Nicolas Macrozonaris returned to Montreal earlier than expected last week following his Stockholm appearance. With the quadricep injury sustained in Saskatoon still nagging him Macrozonaris decided to return home for continuing treatment as he works toward being 100% healthy for the world championships 60-meter event in Birmingham, England on March 14. “It’s too bad I had to cut my trip short,” said Macrozonaris today from Montreal. “Following the Stockholm race my agent received confirmation that I had been accepted in both Birmingham and Lievin Energizer EuroSeries meets, however, I needed more treatment and couldn’t risk aggravating the injury further with worlds a month away. These things happen and I can’t worry about it, the important thing is that I am confident in my abilities and will be ready for worlds. “Given the circumstances I was very happy with my race,” he added when asked about the Stockholm run. “It was a good experience for me, it felt like I was at an NBA all-star game with all the music, cameras and lights. I need to get used to that type of atmosphere.” Macrozonaris will travel with the Canadian team to Europe in early March. His new agent, Italian Federico Rosa, has arranged for a 60-meter appearance in Athens, Greece on March 6 as a final tune up before Birmingham. “I am extremely pleased with how hard Federico is working to get me into these meets,” Macrozonaris said. “All I wanted was an opportunity to run and get some experience and that is happening now.” chrisg@nicolasmacrozonaris.com |

A day earlier he matched his personal best time in the 50-meter event winning the final in 5.69 seconds. “I had 3-4 days of intensive treatment when I got back to Montreal last week, it feels fine now”, he said when reached at his Stockholm hotel this afternoon. Following the Stockholm race Macrozonaris will travel to Birmingham where he is scheduled to compete in the third EuroSeries meeting of the year, the Norwich Union Indoor Grand Prix to be held on Friday, February 21.
