Nicolas Macrozonaris remained on course today with a fourth consecutive win over 60 meters, stopping the clock in a time of 6.58 seconds at McGill University. He could have gone faster, however. “I had to sit in the blocks. The guy in lane eight, who finished last, false-started so I had to be extra careful. Guys play games in the blocks but with this new rule even if you are unaffected by all that and stay focused on your lane, a little nervous twitch or imbalance could cost you the race of your life,” said Macrozonaris after the race. He continued, “A slow starter or guys in outside lanes have been empowered by this. “This new rule cost me a PB today,” added Macrozonaris. Macrozonaris is referring to a new rule that has been in place since January 1st of this year. Passed by a narrow majority of the IAAF congress prior to the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, it allows only one false start for sprint events up to 400 meters. Any athlete who subsequently false starts would be disqualified regardless of whether that athlete was the initial violator. The old rule allowed each athlete in a sprint event a false start, arguably contributing to broadcast and scheduling delays however also adding to the intensity decibel by creating conditions of nervousness and anxiety that make a sprint final so unique. Macrozonaris will now prepare for Canada’s only indoor international invitational, the Knights of Columbus meet in Saskatoon from February 8-9. On Saturday, January 25, Nicolas Macrozonaris will return to the track where he set his personal best time of 6.56 seconds over 60 meters. He is treating this Saturday’s invitational race at McGill University as one of utmost importance. “2003 is a very big year for me. I made some changes and it’s paying off. Last year I was struggling to run times I am now running in semi-finals, it feels great because if I’m running 6.6’s and 6.5’s consistently a 6.4 might drop by,” he says, determined to pave his own way onto the international circuit by putting down some sizzling times. With his two sub 6.60 performances so far this winter including his 6.56 Macrozonaris is ranked number one in the world, creating excitement amongst local fans as local media have picked up on the story and are covering his progress on a regular basis. Both print and television media are expected to cover this Saturday’s race. With his current number one ranking over the 60 meter distance as ammunition, Macrozonaris is in discussions to run at least two races in Europe during the months of February and March prior to the world indoor championships in Birmingham. “To be honest with you I would like to race against some new faces, guys who run faster than 6.9’s,” he says with a laugh. Macrozonaris is also very appreciative of the Greek Athletic Federation (SEGAS) for handing him an olive branch and letting him know the doors to any Greek meet are open to him. He is flattered at the attention Greek media is giving him as well, and by the large number of e-mails he receives from Greek fans who send their best wishes. “It’s great that not just one but two countries follow my progress, not to mention the fact that one of them will be hosting the next Olympics in 2004.” CGG chrisg@nicolasmacrozonaris.com |
